Dieters heads spin daily. No longer do they have confidence in what to put in their shopping basket. Do they load up the meat or just choose whole wheat? Is sugar a placebo, an empty calorie or a storehouse of energy?
Once the issue was all about fat and how to avoid it in its many forms. Fast food establishments have been picketed to reduce the fat or at least infuse with good fat rather than bad fat.
Now the baddie entering the ring to the chorus of boos is the old and trusted Carbohydrate. Seems that he has a hidden deadly secret. He is the one converting all of that stored energy into body fat. He has been making U.S. teenagers obese and giving them type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Hiss, hiss, boo, boo we’re going to throw our chairs at you bad sugar and refined flour.
Dr. Walter Willett from the pinnacle of the nutrition world, chairman of the dept of nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health, says quit looking down on fat and watch out for beverages loaded with sugar, innocent looking potatoes, pretty boys rice, pasta and the most deadly of them all- white bread. Bravo, bravo Dr. Willet. He goes on to say that these hold the key to the elimination of most all weight, diabetes and metabolic diseases.
Backing up Dr. Willet is Dr. Edward Saltzman of Tufts University who confirms that fat was the enemy but now science is fingering carbs in sugar and refined flour as the real perpetrator of our death by overweight.
Americans must not eat the usual 250 t0 300 grams per day of carbs. Cut it out. No more than 125 to 150 grams should be ingested and keep the inner tube from forming around the middle and getting a strangle hold on your vital organs. The evil triplets of diabetes, obesity and heart disease are winning far too many falls says Dr. Frank Hu also of the Harvard School of Public Health. When we fought fat we allowed the other carbs to tag their buddies who crept into the arena behind us.
