Young male driver insurance? That's Ј22k

Typical premiums for young motorists have risen by 50% in the past year, according to research by Which? The consumer group found most insurance companies refused even to offer a quote.

Which? approached 30 firms looking for insurance for an 18-year-old male driving a modest 1.4 litre Citroen Xsara. Just seven offered cover. And for a man of 23 with a no-claims bonus, only nine of 30 firms were prepared to quote.

Which? said: 'The outlays our drivers faced were alarming. Annual premiums for the 18-year-old ranges from £6,413 with Admiral to an eye-watering £12,470 with Co-operative Insurance.

Our 23-year-old would pay anywhere from £2,585 with Admiral to £6,277 with Endsleigh.'

And when it checked premiums for men of the same age driving a more powerful two-litre Ford Mondeo - and living in South East London, the 18-year-old was quoted with £22,000 from the website igo4insurance.co.uk.

The 23-year-old was quoted almost £10,000 from Green Insurance.

Which? said young drivers could get a better deal by taking the Pass Plus driving test to demonstrate they are safe on the road.
