Red Riding Hood and Mars Needs Moms the Shape of Movies to Come in 2011?

With Oscar season already something of a distant dreams, it seems time to come back to Earth with a band and face the fact that all movies are indeed not cut from the same cloth. The annual treats we are privileged to in such pictures as The King’s Speech and The Black Swan raise the bar to levels simply out of reach of the average production, leaving us all wide open to disappointment by subsequent releases. Quite frankly, we allow ourselves to be spoilt.

However, this is no excuse for the utter bilge we are subjected to in certain cases, which brings me nicely onto the new Red Riding Hood picture; an early and likely contender for the worst movie of 2011. Any production which takes itself so seriously should at least have the sense to back it up with something. To say Red Riding Hood falls short is an understatement,  offering nothing more than a nod to the Twilight saga and expecting the reap the rewards of a new wave of mixed genres. Some movies are so awful you can at least find a funny side; this has somehow transcended past that.

Mars Needs Moms, on the hand, is far from Oscar worthy but borders on okay. The animation is okay, storyline okay, soundtrack okay and, well I think you get the point. However,  regardless of the younger demographic targeted by the picture it is a veritable Shawshank Redemption in comparison with the unspeakable entity previously mentioned. The answer is simple, if you really insist on seeing both movies, do so in a sensible order and you’ll be amazed just how incredible ‘okay’ can seem when considered relatively.
