Rolls Royce Electric Vehicle to Take On the Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius?

In an unlikely move by the manufacturer of some of the worlds largest, most expensive and least economical cars, Rolls Royce have announced that they have been working on an all electric powered car. For Rolls Royce to be making an electric vehicle is certainly a sign of the times and shows that even those with over a quarter of a million dollars to spend on a car are considering the cost and environmental impact of what they drive.

The current Rolls-Royce Phantom has 12 cylinders with a combined capacity of nearly 7 litres (at least triple the size of your average car) and will only take you six kilometres on a litre of gas – about 14 mpg.

It would indeed be interesting to see if Rolls Royce could develop an all electric vehicle that could power cars of the size and weight of the Phantom and still satisfy its very discerning customers as far as power and distance are concerned. It is worth also bearing in mind that Rolls Royce are also one of the worlds leading manufacturers of engines for aircraft and ships so there is considerable know-how in the area of engine manufacturing.

Rolls Royce has said that there are no plans as yet to put a vehicle into production but will show a prototype at the Geneva Motor Show. It will be interesting to see what this car looks like to see if Rolls Royce is looking to compete in the market currently dominated by electric vehicles such as the Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf and the Toyota Prius.
